Located right on the Oregon coast highway in between Nehalem Oregon and the turn off to downtown Manzanita, the Bunk House restaurant is a cozy place to get breakfast, lunch, or, dinner. The decor is laid back with an obvious family friendly, local focus. During the cooler months the wood stove in the corner of the dining area is kicking out copious amounts of warm. Water served in jelly jars with handles and local art work decorates the walls.

We went for breakfast, which is advertised as an all day options. All the standard Americann breakfast options are available on the menu. The omelettes come with a couple of large pancakes, they make a great Denver omelette. The presentation of the food is lacking and so if you are looking for a fine dining experience this is not the place, but the servers were excellent and kept drinks full and deliver the food with a smile.

After paying for our breakfast we noticed a tray of very large cinnamon rolls had just come out of the oven. At $2.50 a piece these are certainly an extra to consider. We grabbed one for the road and parked and ate it overlooking the ocean view from Neahakanie mountain.

Overall the Bunk House delivers good food at a fair price and a great option for an early morning meal if the wait at Wanda’s Cafe down the road is too long or the drive to cannon beach too far.

The Shilo Inn Restaurant in Seaside is located right on the Promenade next to the turn around and main downtown beach access. During the warmer months they place tables out in the lawn area behind a nice wooden fence to make it a little more private, but you are still right out in front and have a beautiful view of the beach. During the colder months it is best to get a table near the windows as there is long tall windows that face out towards the promenade and beach.

On our last Seaside adventure we stopped in the Shilo Inn for a snack of steamer clams and cup of clam chowder. The chowder is very creamy and chock full of clams unlike some chowders that seem light and watery the chowder here is thick and creamy with the right amount of potatoes and seasoning. The steamer clam appetizer is amazing it comes in a light sauce with tomatoes, onions, and capers and lemon chunks as well as butter to dip the clams in and a few pieces of toast to clean up the sauce with. Just a delicious seafood appetizer to enjoy while on the Oregon Coast.

For additional details and special offers check out the Google Plus page for the Shilo Inn.

El Mariachi Loco – Manzanita, Oregon

El Mariachi Loco located in the small North coast town of Manzanita is a nice restaurant a block away from the beach and ocean.  If you are visiting Manzanita and looking for an affordable place to sit down and get a quick bite to eat El Mariachi Loco will do the trick.  There were a couple of issues with the food for us, however overall it was good and we would eat there again.  The tacos came in a regular taco bell style taco shell instead of a more authentic corn tortilla with onions and cilantro.  However the meat inside was delicious, a very soft and tasty beef.  The black beans with the meal were a little dry and were not that great, but I tasted my wife’s re fried beans and they were fine, so I would stick to those here. The guacamole was excellent and good portion and both of our chicken dishes were excellent. The salsa was not too thick seemed a tad watery.

If you are in the need of a Mexican fix then El Mariachi Loco will do the trick and for a family grabbing a bite to eat the dinner won’t break the wallet.  Other menu items included standard mexican dishes including burritos, quesadilla’s etc., and several other house specialties which would be worth a try.

The Rising Star Cafe (http://www.risingstarcafe.com/)in Wheeler, Oregon is an excellent restaurant just one block off the Oregon Coast Highway as it passes through the town. Wheeler is a fun place to stop, there are a few antique stores that have interesting things to look as well as views of the Nehalem Bay. We went for dinner and it was an enjoyable experience and goes down on our list of recommendations of a great place to have a meal on the Oregon Coast. The place is small with a comfortable environment making it an exceptional location for a special dinner after a day at the beach. The menu has a range of local ingredient inspired dishes as well as some asian courses which was a pleasant surprise. The restaurant is cash and check only so make sure to bring cash or there is an ATM at the business next door.

We decided to share a few courses and a dessert. The dinner entree was a Halibut and Shrimp dish that also had a garlic mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables. The halibut, Shrimp and Mashed Potatoes was around $21. The halibut and mixed with the mashed was delicious and something that I had not had together before. It is those kinds of dishes that make it fun to go out and try new places and new items that you might not have seen on a menu before. It came with salad with greens, onions, and carrots with a light dressing. We also ordered one of the rice noodle dishes, which had a coconut lime sauce, there was a slight heat to the dish and was mixed with vegatables. The rice noodles was $11 and could have added shrimp or chicken to it for an additional charge. Both dishes were large portions and very satisfying. For dessert we tried the Rising Star Bar which was chocolate chip cookie like pieces with ice cream, chocolate drizzle, and whipped cream. The dessert was $5 and perfect size for sharing between two people. The Rising Star Cafe is worth the trip if you enjoy experiencing great food prepared with fresh, local ingredients.

We look forward to going back to the Rising Star cafe and seeing what is on the menu next.
