As of May 15, 2014 the following recreational sport halibut quota has been caught. The weather was rough limiting all but the biggest of fishing vessels from getting out for the start of the season and the numbers are reflected in the poor catch. As soon as the weather behaves on an open fishing period the numbers will start to come in quickly.

The Oregon Pacific Halibut fishery is always an anticipated angling opportunity by many residents. This is spring time ocean fishing so there will be some good weeks and there will be some days that are pretty wild condition wise. Check out the schedule and dates below, depending on what port you are leaving out of there will always be a few amazing days each season for offshore and inshore halibut fishing.

Always make sure and check the current regulations for any changes as the season will be called early if anglers catch their allotted limit early in the season. The 2014 season has been given a catch limit of .96 million pounds, down slightly from the 2013 Season.

The staff recommended 2014 pacific halibut sport regulations

Columbia River subarea. (1) The all-depth halibut fishery will be open four days a week, Thursday through Sunday, for both the spring and summer seasons. (2) A new nearshore (incidental) fishery with 1,000 pounds or 10% of the Columbia River subarea allocation, whichever is less, will be open inside the 40-fathom line (defined by waypoints) beginning on Monday, May 5, 2014, on days when the all-depth halibut fishery is closed.

Central Coast subarea. The nearshore halibut fishery will open on July 1, seven days a week.

South of Humbug Mountain subarea. A new Southern Oregon subarea (Humbug Mountain to the OR/CA border) was created with 2% of the Oregon sport allocation and an opening date of May 1; open seven days a week.

Make sure to have your fishing license and proper tag to take a legal halibut. The popular method is to use baits including large herring, shad, tuna belly, salmon belly, and other concoctions of bait with a heavy sinker. If you have never fished for halibut off the Oregon coast the offshore fishery in places like halibut hill out of Garibaldi are over 800 feet deep. You will be using a very heavy weight and doing a lot of reeling. But grilling a halibut on the BBQ or grilling some amazing fish tacos makes it all worth it.

The low tides during the winter months are excellent times to get out and enjoy the Oregon Coast. During these hours when the water is receded far out into the ocean can be prime time for some of the most popular beach activities including: exploring tide pools, searching rocky beaches for agates, shells, and other random gifts from the ocean, and digging in the bays and along certain beaches for clams. The following days are the days that there is a negative tide making these excursions more likely to be fruitful. I have only included times that are from dawn to dusk as it can be dangerous during no light situations along the coast especially during the winter. If you are out along the beaches remember to always keep an eye on the ocean, during winter the seas can be stormy and fun to watch, but at any moment a large wave can break on the beach so be vigilant when close to shore digging clams and looking for unique agates in the sand and stones.

The Oregon Coast is very beautiful with the Pacific providing us with the work of its labor: sandy beaches, intriguing rock formations, and delicious fish, shellfish and plants. The Pacific holds many mysteries, beneath its surface is a world so different it almost seems like another planet.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) works to solve these mysteries, and the people of Oregon appreciate them. The groundbreaking ceremony for NOAA was on June 3, 2010, just a little over of a year later the world class facility was dedicated on August 20, 2011 in Newport. It is the home port of four scientific ships that conduct oceanographic research, fisheries surveys, and sea floor mapping operations. These studies help scientists to better understand and protect marine mammals, coral reefs and historic shipwrecks, managing commercial marine fish stocks. The work performed regarding climate processes, and nautical charts help keep mariners safe.

August 10th , the Port and city of Newport will celebrate the one year anniversary of having NOAA in Newport. Festivities begin at 4:30 pm at Port Dock 7 with a picnic barbeque hosted by the Greater Newport Chamber of Commerce. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be cooked by Don Mann, Port General Manager, and friends and the meal will be completed with side dishes and Pepsi products or water. At 5:30 pm during a special ceremony, officials from the Port of Newport, Chamber of Commerce, and other local notables will present a cake to NOAA. Cost for the picnic is $5.

On Saturday, the action starts at 10 am with members of the Northwest Woodies Club will be there with their ‘surfer’ cars. You cannot help admiring these unique cars. The Bay City Cruisers will also participate with some of their antique and classic cars. You can enjoy these wonderful cars and reminisce about the past. The cars will be available for drooling over until 4 pm.

At eleven o’clock, the serious fun begins as teams of chefs compete in the Great Albacore Tuna BBQ Challenge for $2,000 in prizes. You can watch the teams work to produce their tantalizing entries. The Awards Ceremony will be at 3:30 pm. All you can eat samples are $10 for adults and $5 for children 6 through 15 years of age, if purchased in advance on line at www.yaquinabaybbq.com. Tickets purchased at the event will be $12. Sponsors include Chinook Winds Casino and Resort, Oregon Albacore Commission, News Times, among others. Mak Grills, Burning’ Love BBQ, 3 Sisters Kettle Corn, Newport Food Pantry Pepsi Stand and other vendors will be on hand to supplement the tuna.

Visit Historic Newport Oregon

Historic Newport, on the central Oregon Coast, is a small town of just over 10,000 people. It stretches along the coast between two historic lighthouses: Yaquina Head Lighthouse at the north and Yaquina Bay Lighthouse at the south end of town. It is one of the older towns in Oregon establishing a post office in 1868.

The establishment of Newport owes a great deal to the oyster. In 1852, the schooner “Juliet” was driven aground by storms. The captain and crew spent two months in the Yaquina Bay area. They were the first to spread the word about the plentiful oysters in Yaquina Bay. By 1863, two companies were shipping oysters from the bay. Today oysters are farmed in Yaquina Bay and shipped worldwide.

Lincoln County Historical Society was formed in 1948 to preserve the history of the area. The group cares for two historic buildings, Burrows House Museum is a Queen-Anne style house built in 1895, and the Log Cabin Museum which displays the Society’s collection of over 40,000 artifacts either made of used in the county between 1850, and the present.

The Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport is more than just an aquarium. It has over 5,000 marine animals, but is also home to birds, California Sea Lions, Harbor Seals, and Sea Otters. Exhibits at the Oregon Coast Aquarium are known internationally for their quality.

The Aquarium plays an active role in conservation and animal rehabilitation efforts. Currently it has some unusual guests. First a green sea turtle was found on Moolack Beach suffering from hypothermia. No one knows why it came to visit the Oregon Coast from its tropical home, but the waters off Oregon’s coast were not kind to it. The turtle’s body temperature had dropped to 58 degrees down from its normal of 72 to 82 degrees.

Next, evidence indicates that a pair of snowy plovers became lunch for a fox. Monitors from the aquarium rescued the three eggs left in their nest in the Bandon State Natural Area. The first eggs was already hatching, a second hatched in the trip to the aquarium and the third a few hours later.

If you visit the Hatfield Marine Science Center you will be greeted by the current octopus in residence.
Explore the four tidepool tanks, which house sea anemone, sea urchins, skates, and sea stars. Visitors are encouraged to reach in and touch the living marine organisms!

The historic bay front is an eclectic group of businesses. There are gift shops and art galleries, Ripley’s Believe It Or Not, and Wax Works Museum. As you walk along the bay, you may see sea lions in the water and sometimes up on the boardwalk with you. Newport is home to Oregon’s largest fishing fleet. You can go deep sea fishing of take a whale watching trip.

No visit to Newport can be complete without stopping at the original Mo’s for a bowl of clam chowder.
