Fishing off the jetties in Oregon whether you are fishing at the Columbia, Nehalem, Tillamook / Garibaldi, Newport, or Florence are great places along the coast to catch salt water fish from shore. Whether you are fishing with traditional sinkers and bait or using a jig and grub / swimbait you have the chance of hooking into some saltwater fish such as ling cod, cabezon, rock bass, greenlings, and others including the chance for a salmon at the right time of year. There are so many successful jetty fishing techniques, so if you are unsure of how to catch fish in a specific location check with the local tackle shops or just ask around while on a walk on the Jetty and you are likely to get all the details you will need to have the opportunity to catch a fish. The jetties are a platform made of rocks that extend well out into the ocean at the mouths of estuaries in order to eliminate the build up of sand and silt that traditionally would create large bars that could be impossible to cross. The jetties are a potentially dangerous place to fish and are not the places to take the kids to play around as the rocks can be slippery and the current in these areas is treacherous. However the fishing at times can be incredible when the fish are biting so for the hardcore angler the jetties are the right place to wet a line in hopes of setting the hook on a monster salty fish.

Make sure that you have a tide table book and know how to read it for the area you are fishing. Most tackle shops and even the grocery stores in the local areas will have one and it is essential as the best times to go fish off the jetty are around the high tide. Anywhere between 2 hours before or after the high slack tide are the best times to catch a fish. Also evening and night time can be very productive especially for species such as the bass that inhabit these waters as they get the most of their feeding done during the day.

Here is a few of the most popular jetty fishing locations to check out in Oregon.

Enjoy a Break in the Weather for Oregon Coast Beachcombing Success

The Oregon coast can be hammered with winds and rain that may make it seem like a unlikely destination to go to in the winter, however there is still lots of fun activities to enjoy including beach combing during the short breaks in the storms. Unless you are at the coast during a major storm the rain and really strong winds tend to come in waves with breaks with even glimmers of sunshine that if you take advantage of can be rewarding with walks on empty beaches, unusual scenery with the wind and waves, and the occasional treasure washed ashore from the waves and tides. The best time to hit the beach is when it is not raining as it is more enjoyable and easier to layer up a sweatshirt and stay warm to enjoy your time outside. However if you can pick a time that is near after a high tide when the water is receding as you are more likely to find shells, cool looking rocks, and other debris that may have washed up on the beach.

Here is a Sand Dollar that I found nestled next to a piece of wood just below the high water line as the tide was going out.

A great part of the Oregon coast is the free access to the shore that is easily available from North to South making finding a location that you can find access to the sand or rocky shore pretty easy regardless of where you are staying on the coast. The particular place I went to today for my outdoor escape was just south of the Jetty Fishery Marina and RV Park near the Nehalem Jetty and is a great beach just outside of town. There is a lot of wood from big trees around and so it is wise to be careful when walking around and the jetty can cause some very large waves nearby so it can be dangerous during times that the waves are large.

A Google Maps Image of the Jetty where I went today for a beach walk during the break in the rain.

The sand was blowing in the wind giving the beach a wind swept look despite the sand being wet from previous rains.

If you are at the beach during the winter or during a time that it is stormy outside, keep your eyes peeled for a 30 minute window when the weather breaks and you can get outside and enjoy the day. The Oregon coast rewards those that get out there and enjoy a walk on the beach when the weather has been unpleasant. Hope you find something cool, interesting, or unusual on your next beach walk.

The Jetty Fishery Marina is an RV Park with boat launch facilities right near the mouth of the Nehalem Bay into the Pacific Ocean. An excellent place to rent a boat and crab pots and go crabbing during the crabbing season. If you do not want to venture out into the bay to crab for yourself you can buy fresh crab right at the Marina and have them boil, clean, and pack it so you can enjoy a crab dinner at home without pulling a single crab pot. Regardless if you do the crabbing or just purchase from the tanks the crab you will get at the Jetty Fishery are full of meat and delicious, make a crab louie salad, fry up crab cakes, or just get a cracker and crab picker and your favorite dipping sauce and enjoy. There were also oysters available for purchase when we visited the Jetty Fishery Marina last. If the weather is cooperating then you can stay outside by the outdoor fire pit area with large handmade wooden chairs to sit at around the fire to stay warm if it is cool. The store at the Marina has all of the basics for a day out on the water and a soda and candy if you need something little. They will get you all set to have fun on the water and tell you areas to be watch out and be careful around. If you are looking for a fun place to stop and see some wildlife for younger ones to see then the Jetty Fishery Marina is perfect since there is often many seals that live in the bay and ocean hanging out on the beaches nearby. Of course there will always be the seagulls flying in the wind to keep them busy, but with the location of the marina near the mouth of the pacific ocean there is often interesting wildlife to observer.

There are rental cabins and a new luxury bed and breakfast so check out the website at http://www.jettyfishery.com/ to find out more information about the Jett Fishery Marina and RV Park and for contact information to call ahead about making a trip.

Stop at the yellow boats by the water north of Rockaway Beach near the Nehalem Jetty.
