Coos Bay, Oregon is a fun place to travel to on the Oregon Coast, located South of Florence and West of Roseburg it is a popular south coast city that is home to a wide range of fun activities. The bay itself is a wonderful place to go sight seeing or get out on the water in a kayak for just a great day of exercise and nature watching. There is a large fishing community that moors in Coos Bay. Tenmile lake is also just a little north of the main city which is a popular freshwater destination on the coast.

If you are visiting Coos Bay then you may want to consider stopping at the following local businesses for a sweet treat or a lunch or dinner.

Coney Station located next to part of the bay is a great eatery that serves over 20 different beers on tap making it a great place to stop for a drink and a burger or other delicious items. They have a healthy selection of seafood entrees as well. This is a great hang out spot and perfect if you were spending a day at the beach and want to grab a bite to eat for lunch before continuing with your day trip to the Coos Bay area. It has the neighborhood bar type feel with a couple of pool tables and a great selection of brews. Not the best place to come and hang out with the family, but perfect for a day trip lunch or dinner stop.

The Cranberry Sweets Company as seen on the Rachel Ray show is a great local candy shop that makes lots of awesome desserts and treats. If you are a chocolate or candy lover then you will want to include a stop to the factory store in Coos Bay on your next visit. This local treasure has been in business for 50 years. They specialize in making many wonderful fruit based candies with Oregon berries and fruits. They also have an excellent line of brittle’s, toffee’s and caramels or you may just enjoy picking up a package of tea cookies and finding a drive through coffee shop for an espresso or a hot tea and enjoying a snack at a viewpoint looking the bay. This can be a perfect way to enjoy a stop in Coos Bay especially on a raining winter day when you may not want to be out on the beach or bay.

Community Libraries at the Oregon Coast

The Oregon Coast is lucky to have a strong collection of community libraries to serve the people’s interest in reading and learning. There is great spots to go and check out a book or use a computer for an hour up and down the coast. These are five of the larger cities that have great options for local readers to enjoy. Some of the libraries also have smaller branches in the nearby towns and participate in book exchanges, so check with your closest librarian for help finding a particular book cause if they do not have it in, another library nearby may let you check it out and even have it delivered to your local branch.

The Astoria Public Library
This local public library services the community Tuesday through Saturday and is closed on Sunday and Monday. The library houses more than 47,000 books plus other audio visuals like books on tape, DVD’s and Videos among its content collections.

The County of Tillamook Library
While the large facility is located in the heart of Tillamook the county is lucky to have a network of branches in the towns nearby that all share access to the large collection of books the county has amassed. If you are interested in local history and information the Main Branch in Tillamook has excellent local resources. Other branches include: Bay City, Garibaldi, Manzanita, Rockaway Beach, and South Tillamook County which is in pacific City.

The Driftwood Public Library in Lincon City
While still being a relatively small library it this branch is proud to host regular events with local and national authors stopping by for readings of their works. Open every single day of the week aside from major holidays this is a great asset to the Lincoln City community. Located rright along the Oregon Coast Highway it is easy to access the facility. This library prides itself on it Children and Youth services with several regular programs and activities to get kids excited about reading including: Toddlers Story Time, Preschool Story Time, Puppet Shows every 2nd Tuesday of the month, Spanish Story Time, and a Summer Reading Club and more. There is also a great outreach service to bring books to members of the community that are not able to reach the library themselves.

Newport Public Library
The Newport Oregon Public Library has a regular kid and teen event program schedule. There is also meeting rooms that can be reserved and used by members of the community. The library is open every day of the week. Located in the heart of the town just North of Yaquina Bay. Check out the monthly schedule for regular activities and special events that occur predominently on Tuesday, Thursday, and Fridays.

Coos Bay Public Library
The Coos Bay Public Library has a great website with lots of information easily available about the facility, events that occur and regular programs available through the public library. The library is closed on Sunday, but open the rest of the week. If you like to engage with other readers and discuss popular books than the Coos Bay Readers Monthly Book Group is perfect for you, each month a specific book is on the agenda for discussion and the first Wednesday of every month from 6 – 7:30 people are invited to come and discuss. There are also computer classes available to help teach everyone about the basics. The Coos Bay Public Library strives to not only provide a place to check out books, but to help enrich the learning process for all members of the local community.

Coos Bay Perfect Oregon Coast Vacation Destination

The Oregon Coast has many interesting places to visit, each with its own personality. Visitors will find an abundance of things to do in Coos Bay both in the water and on land.

The Coos Bay area was the ancestral home of the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians, and the Coquille Indians. With just short of 16,000 people, Coos Bay is the largest city on the Oregon Coast. Its port is the deepest port between Seattle and San Francisco. The economy of Coos Bay is a blend of shipping, shipbuilding, agriculture, myrtlewood production, and tourism.

To become acquainted with Coos Bay, you can take a walking tour of the downtown. The self-guided tour will lead you to 15 historic buildings and homes, some of which are on the National Historic Register. All of the stops on the tour were built between 1884, and 1920.

The Coos Art Museum, housed in an art deco style post office building built in 1936, is the third oldest museum in Oregon. The Art Museum is well respected in Oregon and around the nation. The museum has hosted an annual maritime artists’ exhibit for the last 19 years, and was recently selected to house the 15th National Exhibition of the American Society of Maritime Artists from March 22 – May 18, 2013. Coos Bay is one of only seven U.S. cities – the only one on the West Coast – to host the exhibit. The Oregon Cultural Trust Board (partially funded by Oregon’s cultural license plates) has allocated the Coos Art Museum $4,800 to help support this exhibit.

Downtown Coos Bay

The bay and the ocean combine to provide an abundance of recreational activities. From the boardwalk you can watch the enormous ocean-going vessels as they move in and out of the bay. Besides these freighters, there is room for you to go water-skiing, swimming, scuba diving, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, or fishing. Along the pier, in the bay, and on the beach you can go crabbing all year round. You can also take a boat in search of whales or deep-sea fishing.

Walking along any of the beautiful beaches, you can find shells, driftwood, and polished rocks. Sometimes people also find banded agates, agatized myrtle, jasper, and other woods. You can explore the tide pools, and observe the tiny animals and plants that live in them. These marine organisms should be left in the tide pools and not harmed. If you are lucky, you might find one of the seals (northern elephant seals, harbor seals, steller sea lions, and California sea lions) that live here snoozing on the beach. If you are a bird watcher, you may see pelagic cormorants, black oystercatchers, and great blue herons.

There are many public parks here for you to enjoy. One of the most popular parks, now known as Shore Acres, was once the private estate of Louis J. Simpson. Simpson collected trees, shrubs, and flowering plants from around the world and planted them in his gardens. As you walk through these beautiful gardens, look for the observation building where you get a terrific view of the rugged seascape and thundering waves. The view here is particularly astounding during winter storms.
