Located right on the Oregon coast highway in between Nehalem Oregon and the turn off to downtown Manzanita, the Bunk House restaurant is a cozy place to get breakfast, lunch, or, dinner. The decor is laid back with an obvious family friendly, local focus. During the cooler months the wood stove in the corner of the dining area is kicking out copious amounts of warm. Water served in jelly jars with handles and local art work decorates the walls.

We went for breakfast, which is advertised as an all day options. All the standard Americann breakfast options are available on the menu. The omelettes come with a couple of large pancakes, they make a great Denver omelette. The presentation of the food is lacking and so if you are looking for a fine dining experience this is not the place, but the servers were excellent and kept drinks full and deliver the food with a smile.

After paying for our breakfast we noticed a tray of very large cinnamon rolls had just come out of the oven. At $2.50 a piece these are certainly an extra to consider. We grabbed one for the road and parked and ate it overlooking the ocean view from Neahakanie mountain.

Overall the Bunk House delivers good food at a fair price and a great option for an early morning meal if the wait at Wanda’s Cafe down the road is too long or the drive to cannon beach too far.

Lazy Susan Cafe – Breakfast in Cannon Beach

We happend to stumble upon the Lazy Susan Cafe for breakfast in Cannon Beach and were very happy with an excellent meal in a fun location. The Lazy Susan is set back from the street and is located just off Hemlock St. and is surrounded by many other shops and dining locations.

There is lots of places to park, but Cannon Beach can be very busy especially on the weekends so it may take a few minutes to find something nearby. The restaurant is located inside of an old house that has been set up as a restaurant and we had our table in the little upstairs area that likely used to be a loft / bedroom. It makes for a small cafe environment that is special and unique compared to other places.

We put our names on the wait list and sat down on the nice wooden benches outside in the small courtyard area that several local businesses shared including a specialty wine shop. After about 10 minutes our table was ready. Scanning through the menu it is obvious that the Lazy Susan focus on high quality fresh ingredients for the meals and it comes through.

We both felt like eating breakfast even though it was getting late into the morning and after 11AM despite the lunches looking tasty as well. We ordered the specials since they just sounded delicious. We got a Peppered Bacon Spinach, and Swiss Cheese Omelet that came with a side of home style potatoes and an english muffin. They also brought out a jar of strawberry jam for the muffin. The other entree we tried was a Chorizo and Tomato Quiche that came with fruit and a bran muffin. We enjoyed it all. Another nice thing about the Lazy Susan is that they have a full coffee espresso bar available so I enjoyed an Americano. Over hearing the neighboring table next to us, it sounds like the iced tea is amazing so if you are in for lunch you might want to give it a try.

If you want a cozy place to eat a good breakfast in Rockaway Beach the Whale Spout does the trick. With a gas stove in the corner and an espresso machine behind the counter this is the place for a good cup of coffee and warm reprieve from a brisk morning walk on the beach. Located right in the middle of town the Whale Spout is perfectly beach themed inside with lots of fish, birds, and other sea creature replicas mounted on the walls including a huge hammer head shark. The breakfasts are good portions, but be prepared to wait to eat on a busy weekend. I have eaten at the Whale Spout in the middle of the week with only one or two other tables occupied and received my food very fast and have also been the 2nd to last table getting seated on a Sunday at 10AM and not received food for nearly an hour and had to get up and ask for a coffee refill myself twice. The food is priced well and again the portions are great and will fill you up for any activities you are planning on doing whether it is a hike up Neahakanie mountain or just a day of lazy antique browsing at the shops in the surrounding cities. My personal favorite is the Rockaway Potatoes which is a large scramble with tasty tatters, eggs, Tillamook cheese, choice of meat and few other veggies such as onions and bell peppers. The Pancakes are large and fluffy. We have tried there specials a few times and been pleasantly surprised as well from a blueberry compote on top of the pancakes to a breakfast burrito. The best thing in my opinion about the Whale Spout is the fact that they have an in house espresso machine and can serve up your custom coffee favorite or just a enjoy a good cup of the house blend, which tends to be a better coffee than the usual breakfast restaurants along the coast. Despite our encounters with some slow service the staff was very nice and apologetic and we would recommend the Whale Spout to anyone looking for a good breakfast in Rockaway Beach.

The Pacific Edge Espresso is a great coffee location that is located in a hut on the South side of Garibaldi near the tall tower.  This drive through coffee station has a great line up of coffee and the largest cup size is a 24oz drink which is great when you need to stay warm on a cold day at the Oregon Coast.  They are also stocked with lots of different tasty treats.  I picked up a blueberry muffin and it was great.  They have a punch card system and so if you are driving through Garibaldi on a regular basis you will want to make sure and ask for a card because after your 12th cup of coffee you will get $3.25 off your next cup.

Don’t forget to get the chocolate covered coffee bean with your espresso. This is a nice treat and packs a punch of quick caffeine to get going for a great day. The Garibaldi marina is really close and is a great place to launch a boat and go fishing when the Salmon fishing and crabbing is in season in the Tillamook Bay. Grab a cup of Coffee at Pacific Edge Espresso and go fish.
